Sprawled over 32,000 square metres on a serene hillside in Lai Chi Kok, Jao Tsung-I Academy is a large-scale project under the ‘Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme’ and also one of Hong Kong’s cultural landmarks. The site of Jao Tsung-I Academy has over 100 years of rich and vibrant history. It was a customs station during the Qing dynasty (1644–1912), then became labourers’ quarters, and thereafter, a quarantine station, prison, infectious disease hospital and psychiatric rehabilitation centre, respectively. Through taking on different functions over time, the site has remained closely intertwined with the historical and social changes of Hong Kong. The building itself also has unique historical and architectural significance. The academy is named in honour of Professor Jao Tsung-I for his extraordinary contributions towards Sinology. To promote cultural inheritance, the academy organises guided tours, thematic exhibitions, performances, festive events, weekend markets, seminars, workshops and educational programmes.
