Look carefully between the high-rise apartments of Mid-levels and you’ll find a truly fascinating slice of Hong Kong’s history. Housed within a historic building that once served as the Bacteriological Institute, this museum offers a unique journey through the evolution of medicine in Hong Kong and its global impact.  

Established in 1996, the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of healthcare in the region. In fact, one of the most dramatic challenges the city faced in its early days led to the founding of the Bacteriological Institute. In 1894 a great plague outbreak ravaged the Chinese residential neighbourhood of Tai Ping Shan, directly below the current museum building. In 1906, the Edwardian-style building, characterised by its red brick facade and ornate Greek-style columns, was constructed to further medical research.

Over the years, the building has undergone several transformations, serving various purposes before being converted into the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences in 1996. Today, visitors can explore its beautifully restored interior, which seamlessly blends historic charm with modern amenities.
