Awarded a 2008 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Honourable Mention for Cultural Heritage Conservation
Located in Pokfulam, the Béthanie was built by the Paris Foreign Missions Society (Missions Etrangères de Paris) in 1875 as a sanatorium and is now a declared monument. Almost a century later, the heritage building was taken over by the Hong Kong Government and leased to the University of Hong Kong from 1978 to 1997. In March 2003, the Legislative Council approved capital works funds for The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts to restore the Béthanie and two neighbouring Dairy Farm cowsheds as its associated campus, housing training facilities for the School of Film and Television of the Academy. The restoration was completed in November 2006. The Béthanie was also awarded an Honourable Mention at the 2008 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Cultural Heritage Awards.
You may walk around the premises or join the guided tour to visit the Béthanie Museum to find out more about the building’s history.
Guided tours in English are available upon request. For enquiries on guided tours, please contact the Venue Performance Unit of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts directly.
