Sham Shui Po was once the heart of Hong Kong’s textile manufacturing industry. Today, the district remains a popular spot for designers and artisans looking for textiles, fashion accessories and fabrics. The Yen Chow Street Temporary Hawker Bazaar, also known as ‘Pang Jai’, was the district’s famous fabric market — it opened in 1978 and was home to approximately 190 stalls. It was, in 2023, moved to the Tung Chau Street Temporary Market —  300 metres away from its original location. The design of the new Sham Shui Po Fabric Market pays homage to the neighbourhood’s rich architectural heritage and icons like nostalgic iron gates, floor tiles, post boxes and street signs. Its golden orange colour theme symbolises the enduring vitality of the fabric industry, countering the notion that it has become a sunset industry. The market occupies three blocks, with a range of stalls selling fabric products, including original operators from ‘Pang Jai’. If you’re looking for fabrics and other textile goods, this is definitely the place to go.
