Located on the harbourfront of Causeway Bay, the Noonday Gun is an iconic landmark in Hong Kong and a popular destination for travellers. The Noonday Gun has been fired every day at noon since the 1860s, serving as a timekeeping tradition for the city.
The Noonday Gun holds historical significance as it stands on the first plot of land ever sold through public auction in Hong Kong. It remains under the ownership of Jardine Matheson to this day. While the exact origin of this tradition is uncertain, it has withstood the test of time, surviving the world wars, severe weather events, and decades of modernisation — it’s truly a living testament to Hong Kong’s past and present. On New Year’s Eve, the gun is also fired at midnight to welcome the arrival of the New Year, known as the ‘Midnight Gun’.
Visitors from the general public can witness the Noonday Gun Salute every day from 12 to 12:30pm.
