Lifeguard services at public beaches in Hong Kong are usually available between April and October. Please refer to LCSD’s website for details. The public should not swim at beaches without lifeguard services to avoid accidents.
Lantau Island’s lovely, gently curving Pui O Beach, at the foot of lush rolling hills, is one of Hong Kong’s lesser-known delights. And after spending a tranquil day relaxing on its tree-lined, soft powdered golden sand, or sipping a perfectly chilled beer at a laid-back waterfront bar while watching the setting sun slowly disappear from view, you may want to keep it a secret from your friends. Its alluring beachfront setting provides a welcome destination for weary legged hikers and swimmers. For an alternative to the wide range of typical dishes served at its beachside restaurant, you can take a short bus ride to the coastal town of Mui Wo to find a good selection of cafes and restaurants.
The beautiful, remote location of Pui O Beach, with its long stretch of soft golden sand at the edge of tree-covered rolling hills, means it is not as widely known as some of the beaches on Hong Kong Island. Yet it attracts many devotees — including day-tripper swimmers, novice surfers looking to hone their skills and families with young children keen to show off their sandcastle-building abilities. You are also likely to spot some of the area’s most famous residents, water buffaloes. Make sure you stay late enough at the beach to watch the gorgeous sunset. It’s a magical time for relaxing with friends and taking stunning Instagrammable photographs that is best enjoyed while sipping a bottle of local craft beer and munching on a burger. Right on the beachfront you will find a restaurant and bar, and a fast-food kiosk. You can also buy refreshments — and beach equipment — at a few local shops located along the paths leading from the bus stop to Pui O Beach. There are also some shops and restaurants along South Lantau Road at three nearby villages — Lo Uk Tsuen, Sun Wai Tsuen and Lo Wai Village.
A short bus ride from Pui O takes you to Mui Wo Ferry Pier, where you will find a wealth of good dining options. The cooked food market beside the ferry pier is home to many small seafood restaurants offering fine sea views. You may also be lured to another restaurant, across the road, by enticing scents of freshly made, thin-crust pizzas and burgers, or the nearby bakery’s just-brewed coffee and tasty baked offerings.
From the MTR Tung Chung Station Exit B, take bus 3M at Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus. Alight at the Lo Uk Tsuen stop and walk across South Lantau Road. Both paths next to Bui O Public School lead to Pui O Beach. Alternatively, you can also take a ferry from Central Pier No. 6 to Mui Wo. The bus terminus is just in front of Mui Wo Ferry Pier. Take bus 1, 2, 3M or 4 and alight at Lo Uk Tsuen stop.
From Pui O Beach, walk back along the same path as before to Lo Uk Tsuen on South Lantau Road. You can take bus 3M towards Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus. If you go back to Mui Wo, cross the road to find the bus stop in front of the Law Uk Tsuen Public Toilet. All the buses here, 1, 2, 3M, 4, A35 and N35, go to Mui Wo Ferry Pier.
